Science in South Africa

South Africa’s National System of Innovation (NSI) is a multifaceted framework that brings together key sectors, each playing an essential role in advancing scientific research and fostering innovation. Working within an international context, the NSI supports efforts that drive technological and economic progress, addressing pressing societal needs.

Key national sectors

• Department of Science and Innovation (DSI): Overseeing public NSI institutions, the DSI sets the strategic priorities for science and technology and ensures the successful implementation of innovation policies.
• Higher education and government departments: Our higher education institutions, alongside government departments such as Agriculture, Health, and Energy, focus on nurturing talent, generating knowledge, and conducting research and development (R&D).
• Business sector: Both private enterprises and state-owned entities like Eskom are central to translating research into practical innovations that drive economic growth.
• NGOs: Non-governmental organisations play a critical role in supporting R&D, particularly in areas addressing social issues and environmental challenges.

Key science and technology functions

• Policy formulation and advice: Managed by the DSI and supported by advisory bodies like the National Advisory Council on Innovation (NACI), policy initiatives guide the NSI’s strategic direction.
• Funding: Institutions like the National Research Foundation (NRF) and the Medical Research Council (SAMRC) are key funders, with a growing focus on competitive and directed funding to enhance the impact of research.
• Performance: Research is conducted across higher education institutions, public research institutions, and the private sector, driving innovation and development.
• International relations: Since 1994, South Africa has made it a priority to normalise and enhance international scientific relations, working towards stronger global engagement.
